Roberta Jones, former National Park Service Ranger from Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, discusses our state and nation prior to the War of 1812, the causes for war and conditions of the military during preparations for the Battle of Lake Erie.
The presentation takes place on the 199th Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie in the Statehouse Rotunda, beneath the famous painting, "Perry's Victory".
The Battle of Lake Erie, fought on Sept. 10, 1813, was one of the biggest naval battles in the War of 1812. Led by Master-Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, a United States Navy fleet overtook their British counterparts to ensure American control over Lake Erie for the rest of the war.
