Ohio Statehouse State Room
(COLUMBUS, OH) — Members of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will meet Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus. The business meeting will be held in the State Room (room #108) and will begin at 2 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. The meeting agenda is available upon request.

Half-staff flags at the Ohio Statehouse
In accordance with the order issued by the President of the United States and in remembrance of the victims of the shooting in Lewiston, Maine on October 25, 2023, and by proclamation of the Governor, the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the State of Ohio until sunset on October 30, 2023.
 
 
 

Nominate a Great Ohioan
(Columbus, Ohio) – The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) and the Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) announce that the nomination process for the 2024 “Great Ohioans Award” is now open and the CSF is accepting nominations. The Great Ohioan Award commemorates Ohioans who have played a significant role in an event or series of events of lasting significance in world, American or Ohio history. To be selected for the Great Ohioan Award, the nominee must have resided in Ohio for a minimum of five years. In addition, at least 25 years must have passed since the event in which the nominee participated is being commemorated. Nomination deadline is Sunday, December 3, 2023.

The list of Great Ohioans includes 59 people with notable achievements. Neil Armstrong, Toni Morrison and Judith Resnik are among the names of those who made their mark in our history. An exhibit at the Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center lets visitors learn about the recipients of the Great Ohioan award and discover how they affected local, national and world history. The display uses videos, facts and photos to explore the life and legacy of each Great Ohioan.

South Light Court Elevator
Two elevators in the Ohio Statehouse will be closed for modernization. The work will continue for several months.

South Light Court Elevator Closed



The elevator in the South Light Court will be closed beginning October 18 for construction. The stairs will remain open to the public for several months during the project.

For elevator access to the House of Representatives and the House Clerk’s office, please follow signage to the south elevator near the Map Room and Atrium. On the second floor, turn right and enter the House Chamber. A member of the House Sergeant-at-arms team will be available for assistance in the House Chamber.

South Entrance Elevator Closed



Next week, the southwest elevator leading to and from the parking garage sliding doors will be closed for renovations from October 24 through the month of November.

Those who require elevator access may use the northwest elevator near the revolving doors to and from the parking garage. Visitors in the garage without ID badges may use the intercom to call the Ohio State Highway Patrol for security check and entrance to the Ohio Statehouse.

Half-staff flags at the Ohio Statehouse
(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—In response to the unprovoked attack and invasion of Israel, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the State of Ohio.

The order will be in effect from sunrise October 10, 2023 until sunset on October 12, 2023.
 
 
 

Dale Gnidovec leads a tour
(Columbus, OH)—The Ohio Statehouse will celebrate National Fossil Day, October 11, 2023 by offering a FREE fossil tour on Capitol Square. The special tour will take place Wednesday, Oct. 11 from noon until 1:30 p.m. Expert geologists will explore the limestone walls, stairs and columns that support the Ohio Statehouse. Visitors will discover fossils of ancient sea creatures.

The tour will start in the Worthington Center, located on the ground floor of the Ohio Statehouse. The tour will be conducted by Dale M. Gnidovec, Curator of the OSU Orton Geological Museum and Mark Peter, Paleontologist at ODNR Division of Geological Survey. While the event is free, participants are asked to RSVP to Katie Montgomery by Tuesday, Oct. 10 at kmontgomery@ohiostatehouse.org or 614-728-3726.

Each visitor will receive a free copy of the booklet, Statehouse Fossils: A Guide to Fossils of the Ohio Capitol, by Mark E. Peter. An informative poster of Fossils of the Columbus Limestone is for sale at the Statehouse Museum Shop.

National Fossil Day is an annual celebration of geology. It occurs during Earth Science Week every year. These celebrations encourage young people to explore careers in earth science, and engage everyone in the importance of our resources and environment.

This tour is one of many activities during Earth Science Week in Ohio.
