Elizabeth Smith served one term in the Ohio House of Representatives. She was chosen by the Summit County Democratic Executive Committee to run for her late husband's seat, John L Smith, who had died in 1957 during his bid for reelection. He had served two terms in the Ohio House, and had sought election as mayor of Barberton, losing to incumbent and former legislator Catherine Dobbs. Upon her acceptance of selection to run for election, Smith stated in a 1958 Barberton Herald article, "I accept the nomination with a feeling of deep humility and profound gratitude." She promised to "be a conscientious, hard-working member, to keep myself informed about all business and legislation, to oppose extravagant spending of the taxpayers' money, and to support all measures that will advance the cause of good, honest, progressive government."
Elizabeth Smith was honored for her work in the Ohio House by the Business and Professional Women's Club.
