Biography

Gertrude Polcar was a Parma City Council member from 1960 to 1968, and an assistant attorney general of Ohio from 1945-1949 and 1957-1959. She then entered the Ohio General Assembly for two terms in the Ohio House beginning in 1968.

 

During her career as a state representative, she joined other women legislators in sponsoring bills that would guarantee women equal rights in the work place. She fought to include "sex" as a distinction so that outdated laws that prohibited women from working certain jobs or overtime hours would be repealed.

 

A graduate of Stanford University, she received her legal degree from the University of Chicago. Polcar was a member of the Ohio, Cleveland, and Cuyahoga County bar associations, the Women Lawyers Club of Cleveland, the South Ridge Civic Association, and the Parma Homeowners Association.
